Making Meaning
This is a new reading program designed to help children build their reading comprehension and social skills. The children hear books read aloud and discuss stories with partners and as a class. This first unit focused on helping your child make connections between the stories and their own experiences. The program is helping our class become a community of readers by making everyone feel welcome and safe. In addition, each child in our class reads books that are at his or her reading level for up to 30 minutes every day. We will be supplementing this program by using many of the stories from the basal reader as well. Your child will bring their basal reader home for additional reading practice on Wednesdays throughout the school year.
Reading Homework - Get involved with your child!
Your child should bring home a short text that they have read in school. We practiced reading it aloud once, but your child will benefit from repeated practice at home. Try "echo- reading" if your child is having a hard time reading the passage fluently. This is when you read a sentence using expression and pausing for punctuation and then your child reads the same sentence back to you. Each passage includes some short questions or activities for you to do with your child. Please sign & return the homework NO LATER than Friday. Thank you in advance for helping your child develop into a more fluent reader.
